CAMP PHILOSOPHY
The Jones Wrestling Camp is designed to provide all wrestlers with an opportunity to pursue excellence. We have
developed a wrestling camp that will accommodate all skill levels—from the beginning wrestler who is looking for fun on the mat, to
the elite wrestler who is willing to train beyond their limits. It is important to us that each athlete receives the special attention
they deserve to expand their wrestling skills. Each session will primarily focus on the five most important areas in the sport of
wrestling; technique, live wrestling, mental attitude, strength training, and sport specific conditioning. As an experienced and dedicated
staff, we are committed to preparing each wrestler to succeed in wrestling and in life.
"They're my favorite wrestlers," Lydic said. "They teach you great things, and they bring in great clinicians. They've made me better. It's a great camp for me." Lydic is among the 49 wrestlers who attended the camp this week at Kirk S. Nevin Arena in Greensburg. The group learned from two of the greatest high school and college wrestlers from Pennsylvania.
Greg Jones was a three-time NCAA Division I champion, and Vertus Jones was a three-time NCAA All-American. Both won state titles at Greensburg Salem and wrestled at West Virginia. "With all the years of experience we have, we try to mix our own style and philosophy with what our dad (Donald Vertus Jones) taught us when we got started," Vertus Jones said. "What makes us smile is the smile we put on the faces of the wrestlers."
The Joneses' philosophy is to provide all wrestlers with an opportunity to pursue excellence.
"We have developed a wrestling camp that will accommodate all skill levels -- from the beginning wrestler who is looking for fun on the mat to the elite wrestler who is willing to train beyond their limits," Greg Jones said. "It is important to us that each athlete receives the special attention they deserve to expand their wrestling skills.
"We take a lot of pride in what we teach. We always start was the basics and the wrestlers work very hard. It's always a good feeling when they walk out of here sweating, dragging and with a smile on their face. They guys just love to wrestle."
The weeklong camp has two sessions. The morning session, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. is for the wrestlers age 6 to sixth grade. The afternoon session is from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. for junior and senior high school wrestlers. Each session primarily focuses on the five most important areas in the sport of wrestling; technique, live wrestling, mental attitude, strength training and sport specific conditioning.
"This is a great camp," said Derry upcoming freshman Travis Shaffer. "I was at a West Virginia University Camp last month, and they were there. I've learned to wrestle with more confidence. I'm working on my setups and movement on my feet."
Shaffer will be following big footsteps at Derry with the graduation of three-time PIAA champion Troy Dolan.
